Promoting and protecting the ecological integrity of the Oak Ridges Moraine for all

Since 1989, Save the Oak Ridges Moraine (STORM) Coalition has focused on education, awareness, and protection of the Oak Ridges Moraine through grassroots conservation efforts.

The Moraine - a geological landform, shaped more than 12,000 years ago during the last ice age - plays a critical role in the ecological health and hydrological stability of over 30 surrounding municipalities on Southern Ontario's "Greenbelt".

Without a healthy Moraine, the area’s environment and water systems would be far less resilient, resulting in degraded ecosystems for wildlife, diminished clean water supply, increased flooding, and more.

Our Priorities

We work to protect the Moraine through community-driven advocacy, accessible mapping tools, and active policy engagement. From mobilizing residents around key development threats to monitoring land use decisions across municipalities, our programs support stronger environmental protections and informed public action.

Community Engagement & Awareness

Our Save Mary Lake campaign is an ongoing community effort focused on improving the development of a long-term care facility on a sensitive hydrological area of the Moraine in order to reduce environmental risks affiliated with its construction.

Our Moraine Watch program is a community mapping tool that serves to identify and mobilize for land use planning that respects the spirit and intent of the protections put in place to protect the Moraine across its 32 municipalities.

Policy Review &

We monitor, review, and analyze development plans and zoning changes that could impact the Moraine while engaging with policymakers and elected officials to advocate for stronger protections, provide expert input, and raise awareness about key threats.

Report A Development

Our ability to monitor and take action against activities negatively impacting the Moraine requires community involvement. By reporting issues, community members play a critical role in protecting sensitive ecosystems and safeguarding water resources.

Attend a Community Event

STORM regularly hosts community events to raise awareness, share knowledge, and bring people together in support of the Moraine. Attending an event is a great way to learn more, meet others who care about conservation, and take action close to home.

Volunteer

As a grassroots effort, STORM is predominantly volunteer run. If you’re looking to get more involved in protecting the Moraine and safeguarding the environment at a local level, let us know! We are always looking for engaged volunteers!

Donate

As a charity, STORM relies on the generosity of donors to support its grassroots conservation work. Consider making a donation today to protect nature and wildlife on the Moraine for generations to come. Donations are receipted for tax purposes.
