SAVE THE OAK RIDGES MORAINE COALITION (STORM)

Save The Oak Ridges Moraine (STORM) Coalition is focused on protecting the

ecological integrity of the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM). Since 1989, STORM has

worked at the local and regional levels to ensure municipalities make good

planning decisions based on the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan that

respect the ecological and hydrological values of the moraine. STORM also works to support communities and First Nations in their efforts to improve to community well being.

STORM works collaboratively and has established relationships of mutual support with diverse groups and organizations. STORM participates in environmental land use planning, policy development and stewardship to safeguard the moraine from inappropriate development that have negative impacts.

STORM’s years of experience and well-developed network of local and regional contacts were critical to the campaign that saved (legislatively) the Oak Ridges Moraine. In 2001, the Ontario Legislature unanimously enacted the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act and in 2002 the province passed the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan.

The new planning environment has allowed STORM to shift from advocating for protection to ensuring that the protections put in place are properly implemented. STORM remains a leader of moraine protection by focusing on the moraine’s natural and cultural heritage, and facilitating and implementing policy monitoring and best planning practices. Recently STORM along with other environmental organizations in southern Ontario have initiated efforts to extend the lessons of Oak Ridges Moraine planning and protection to other moraines and ecologically important regions across Ontario.

Leading this transition is a dedicated group of people including the Board of Directors, students, researchers, special advisors and staff.
