A vital landscape and commitment to its protection

Founded more than 25 years ago by residents and experts determined to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine, STORM helped secure lasting protections for one of Ontario's most important landscapes. Today, we continue to advocate for its conservation, ensuring the Moraine's forests, wetlands, wildlife, and water resources are protected for future generations.

What We Do

STORM works collaboratively with communities, organizations, experts, and decision-makers across the Oak Ridges Moraine. Through long-standing relationships and a shared commitment to conservation, we contribute to land-use planning, policy development, environmental stewardship, and public education to help ensure the Moraine remains healthy, resilient, and protected.

For more than 25 years, STORM has brought together local knowledge, scientific expertise, and community advocacy to advance the protection of the Oak Ridges Moraine. This collective effort played a critical role in securing lasting legislative protections for the Moraine, including the unanimous passage of the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act in 2001 and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan in 2002.

Our Vision

As planning policies have evolved, STORM’s work has expanded from securing protections for the Oak Ridges Moraine to ensuring those protections are upheld, strengthened, and effectively implemented.

Today, STORM continues to be a leading voice in Moraine conservation, advancing policy monitoring, best planning practices, and public awareness of the Moraine’s natural and cultural heritage. In recent years, STORM has also worked alongside environmental organizations across southern Ontario to apply the lessons learned from Oak Ridges Moraine protection to other moraines and ecologically significant landscapes throughout the province.

Guiding this work is a dedicated network of board members, students, researchers, advisors, staff, and community supporters who bring expertise, commitment, and care to the ongoing protection of the Moraine.
