Stop Institutional Development on the ORM

The proposed St. Rita - Mary Lake Long-Term Care (LTC) facility, is a major new development slated for the Oak Ridges Moraine outside King City's urban boundary. The chosen site holds immense environmental significance on the Oak Ridges Moraine and warrants safeguarding against further deterioration. Positioned within the Provincially Significant Eaton Hall - Mary - Hackett Lakes Wetland Complex, the development site comprises 225 wetlands, forming one of the largest and most diverse wetland complexes on the Oak Ridges Moraine. An OMNR report underscores its importance, noting the high concentration of significant plants, animals, and kettle lakes. Notably, the small spring-flooded wetlands play a crucial role in amphibian breeding, sustaining various thicket swamp and marsh types within the complex. Moreover, these wetlands contribute to spring flows in the East Humber and act as recharge areas for the aquifers on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Preserving this ecologically vital area becomes imperative in light of its ecological diversity and hydrological contributions.
